MANUALS/GUIDELINES

NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules (NIH Guidelines), 2002

These guidelines outline the various aspects of recombinant DNA research, including the types of research projects covered by these Guidelines, the level of containment that is required for different types of research including plant and animal work, roles and responsibilities of the researcher and the Institutional Biosafety Committee, and how to classify the risk of certain biological agents.

Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL)

The BMBL is a valuable resource for information on laboratory and animal biosafety level practices and containment. There is also a section which describes many parasitic, bacterial, fungal, viral, and rickettsial agents as well as prions, arenaviruses and arboviruses in terms of their laboratory hazards, safety precautions, and transfer.

ISB Plant Bio-Containment Manual

This manual covers several aspects of plant containment such as: plant biosafety levels, greenhouse management, facility design for containment, and others. This manual applies to greenhouses that contain genetically modified plants or plant-associated organisms.

Arthropod Containment Guidelines

These Guidelines cover risk assessment of arthropod vectors, the containment practices, equipment and facility requirements for the four Arthropod Containment Levels, as well as information on the transfer of arthropod vectors.

MSU Biosafety Manual

This manual outlines recommended engineering controls, personal protective equipment, and work practice controls designed to protect the researcher, the environment and the quality of the work here at Michigan State. Decontamination, waste handling and disposal, and recombinant DNA are also discussed.
