TRAINING

Listed below are some of the biological training courses offered through ORCBS. To view training course schedules and sign up for a course, see the ORCBS website.

Biological Safety Training
The training was developed to address specific biosafety needs of research personnel working with infectious agent and/or recombinant DNA. This training is based on MSU's Biological Safety Manual.

Biohazardous Waste Training Brochure
This training brochure is to be used by supervisors and employees who must comply with the Michigan Medical Waste Regulatory Act (MMWRA) training requirements. The MMWRA training requirements apply to every employee who generates, handles, treats and/or disposes of biohazardous waste (including sharps) at MSU. This brochure includes general policies that apply to MSU biohazardous waste generators as well as a site-specific training record that is to be completed with the employee's supervisor and returned to the ORCBS for recordkeeping purposes.

Bloodborne Pathogen Initial Training
This training is designed for MSU personnel who work in a laboratory or healthcare setting and are involved with human blood or other potentially infectious materials including human cell lines.

Bloodborne Pathogen Refresher Training
This is the annual refresher training required for those who have already taken an initial course. You can complete the on-line Bloodborne Pathogen Refresher or you can contact the ORCBS to schedule an on-site training program for your department.

Shipping and Transportation of Biological Materials
This training is required for anyone who plans to ship materials that are classified as "infectious substances" under the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) regulations. This includes multi-modal courier shipments (i.e. items offered for shipment by FedEx or Airborne Express). There are specific requirements for proper packaging, labeling, and documentation under the IATA regulations that require this training.

Please note that biological materials may be classified as "infectious substances" if they contain or are suspected to contain Risk Group 2 pathogens or if the purpose of the shipment is determination of the presence of a pathogen. To determine whether you need this training, please contact Jamie Willard at 353-1877.
